Jat Quota Protests Reach Delhi, Violence Escalates In Haryana's Rohtak

Violence continued in different parts of Haryana, particularly Rohtak and Jind, as protesters demanding reservation in jobs and education for the Jat community set fire to police vehicles, buses, hotels and a mall. Despite a curfew and army presence, protesters continued violence in Rohtak setting a petrol pump on fire.





Here are the 10 latest developments in this story:

1- Protesters in Rohtak have entered a girls' hostel in Maharishi Dayanand University despite a curfew, sources said. The army had to use choppers to enter the town because protesters had dug up roads at several entry points.

2- Curfew was imposed in Jind today after protesters set the railway station in Budha Kheda on fire this morning. The protesters also burned down buses, cars and a petrol pump in Rohtak.

3- The army is positioned in Rohtak and Bhiwani, where curfew was imposed yesterday, and six other affected districts including Jind, Jhajjar, Sonepat, Karnal, Kaithal and Hisar. The situation is now said to be under control in Bhiwani, where army took out a flag march this morning. The administration has asked people to stay at their homes, official sources said.

4- The reservation protests reached Delhi on Saturday with agitations on the Delhi University north campus and at the Delhi-Sonepat border blocking the National Highway 1, which connects the national capital with Haryana, Punjab, Himachal Pradesh and Jammu and Kashmir.

5- Union Ministers Rajnath Singh, Manohar Parrikar, Sushma Swaraj and Arun Jaitley reviewed the situation in the state with National Security Advisor Ajit Doval late last evening. 3,300 additional paramilitary personnel have been sent to assist the state government.

6- Yesterday, hundreds of protesters broke into the home of state Finance Minister Captain Abhimanyu and set it on fire. The minister was in Chandigarh. His family was also air-lifted and brought here.

7- Protesters also set the RN Mall in Rohtak, a school owned by Captain Abhimanyu , several other shops and toll plazas on fire. They also blocked highways and rail tracks, severely hitting rail and road traffic and also supply of essential commodities. Massive jams were reported from cities including Gurgaon.

8- Three people were killed in police firing yesterday. "One person was killed when Border Security Force personnel opened fire in self-defence after being fired upon by a mob," Haryana police chief YP Singhal said. Two other people died in hospital.

9- Mobile internet and SMS services were blocked in Rohtak on Thursday as the week-long agitation escalated. Schools will remain closed in at least eight districts today.

10- After an all-party meeting with the Chief Minister yesterday, Jat leaders rejected an appeal to call off their agitation. They say they will continue their protest till a legislation is passed to meet their demands.
